About the Artist

Local Tallahassee Artist, Joel Thornton, was born in Fajardo, Puerto Rico, where he spent his early years surrounded by the island’s natural beauty and vibrant culture. He discovered his love of painting in his youth, guided by his mother, Josefina “Fina” Thornton — a teacher who inspired him to create and cultivated his passion for the arts. Although Joel set painting aside for many years while building his career and raising a family, her influence remained constant.

About twenty years ago, he returned to the canvas and quickly realized his talent had never left. Since then, his work has only deepened in expression, each piece reflecting his love for color, form, and storytelling.

Family is at the heart of Joel’s life and art. With his wife by his side, three children — two daughters and one son — a supportive son-in-law, and now a cherished new grandson, Joel continues to create art rooted in love, memory, and inspiration. His journey proves that creativity never fades; it grows richer with time and with family.
