The Family Behind the Canvas
My dad has always said the people worth knowing are the people worth painting. My mom Julia never sat for a formal portrait, but she's in almost everything he makes anyway. You can feel her in the way he paints light in a kitchen, or the way he never rushes a face. His mother, Fina, is the reason any of this exists at all. She was a teacher, and somewhere along the way she put a brush in his hand and told him not to waste it.
He started painting in the garage, then moved to the kitchen table, and these days he paints at home, wherever there's room to set up. We grew up watching him work, and now there's a grandbaby running around who already has him wrapped around a finger covered in paint.
Family and the arts are what we care about most, and every painting on this page was made for someone my dad loves, a way of passing down a little piece of himself.

Joel's daughter Ava, copper hair falling across freckled cheeks, brown eyes half hidden and entirely knowing. The teal background hums behind her in oil while the likeness captures something a photograph never could. She was always going to be exactly like this.

Mason at his graduation, blue suit, arms crossed, smiling like a man who just finished a PhD in Aerospace Engineering and has every right to. Joel painted his son at one of the proudest moments the Thornton family has ever had.

Grace mid-stride on the soccer field, hair flying, number 7 on her back. She was a defender known for kicks that traveled the length of the field, and you can feel every bit of that in this painting. The oil sky burns gold and blue behind her while the whole canvas moves with her.

Grace, Mason and Ava emerge from a canvas inspired by the ornate, symbol-laden world of Gustav Klimt, gold, butterflies, pelicans and geometric wonder filling every corner around them.
