Number 7 - Canvas

Number 7 comes from Joel's own love of the game. He's been a baseball fan his whole life, and Mantle was worth painting on that alone. He worked from research rather than one single photo, piecing together the stance, the jersey, the weight of the moment right before a pitch. Mantle is painted from behind, bat in hand, that iconic white jersey glowing against a deep, swirling background of teal, navy and gold. It feels less like a ballpark and more like memory itself. Painted with a kind of quiet reverence, a man at the plate, the whole canvas holding its breath. Painted by Joel Thornton in 2025.
